Winery Tour: New for 2010
For the first time, World Ag Expo agricultural tours will include wineries. A double-decker bus will transport visitors to three wineries for a unique wine-tasting experience in the heart of California wine country, the San Joaquin Valley where more than 60 percent of the state’s wine grapes are grown.

Farm Tour# 3 Dairy: Fletcher Dairy & Barcellos Farms
Wednesday's dairy tour will feature a stop at Fletcher Dairy located just south of Tulare, as well as an additional dairy facility nearby. Fletcher Dairy, owned by brothers Rob and Ed Fletcher, milks 650 cows two times daily on a double 14 herringbone milking parlor. Visitors will also get a look at the commercial dairy's nutrient management system, to learn more about Fletcher's strategies for feeding and nutrition.
The tour will also stop for a lesson in conservation tillage at Barcellos Farms. Barcellos Farms and T-Bar Dairy in Tipton has made the expansion over succeeding generations from a traditional dairy and corn operation to a diverse commercial custom farming operation. Barcellos Farms uses state-of-the-art equipment including GPS and laser leveling to custom farm under conservation tillage and other modern farming techniques.
Farm Tours # 4: Terminus Dam & Monrovia Nursery Tours
Wednesday's agribusiness tour provides a unique opportunity to visit the heart of the surface water system that feeds the Tulare County farming region with a stop at Terminus Dam. It is the local snow melt release point for surface water from Kaweah Lake, providing for flood control, irrigation and recreation. The Terminus Dam water master will provide a local water history of the region as well as information about water use from resources at the dam. The second stop will feature a visit to Monrovia Nursery's 400-acre greenhouse and nursery facility in Visalia. Monrovia is one of the world's largest producers of container grown plants with more than 2,000 different varieties. The company has introduced hundreds of patented plants, which are shipped to independent garden centers nationwide.

Speakers: Dan Dooley, Senior Vice President, External Relations, Vice President, University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Prior to joining the university, Dooley, an attorney, was a partner at Dooley, Herr and Peltzer, LLP, a law firm emphasizing agricultural, environmental, business and water rights law. Three years ago Dooley was cited by California Lawyer magazine as its Lawyer of the Year for his work to achieve settlement of two-decades-old litigation relating to the San Joaquin River. He previously served as Chief Deputy Director of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (1977-80) and Chair of the California Water Commission (1982-86).
David Nawi, Sacramento, Director, Pacific Region of Department of the Interior; Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Interior for California and Nevada. Last September, he was appointed by Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar as Senior Advisor to the Secretary for California and Nevada. Nawi served from 1993 to 2001 as Interior’s Regional Solicitor for the Pacific Southwest Region, where he was extensively involved in California water issues and the implementation of reclamation law and the Endangered Species Act. Speakers: Blake Sanden, UC Cooperative Extension Irrigation and Agronomy Farm Advisor, Kern County. He conducts applied research and extension programs focusing on irrigation system management, salinity/fertility management for all crops, and agronomic field crop production of alfalfa, dry beans and oil crops. He has 28 years of experience in production ag, international development and extension. His many projects include: development of salt tolerance thresholds for pistachios in the San Joaquin Valley, soil moisture monitoring and irrigation efficiency assessment on 12,000 acres in Kern County.
Blaine Hanson, UC Cooperative Extension Irrigation and Drainage Specialist. He has been in his current position since 1977. Gary C. Smith will explain how beef-system traceability will affect beef producers’ business going forward. He is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University and has occupied the Ken and Myra Monfort Endowed Chair in Meat Science at the university since 1990. Previously, he served as professor and head of the Animal Science Department at Texas A&M University. Smith is recognized worldwide for his expertise in red meat safety, palatability and retailing.

Elkhorn Dairy is a large-herd operation north of Visalia featuring a state-of-the-art carousel milking parlor that handles 3,300 cows three times a day. The modern facility is also in the process of installing solar panels, giving tour attendees a first-hand look at the commercial application of solar power in the agriculture industry. The tour will also stop a few miles down the road at the long-time dairy family's original milking facility where three new stalls have been added to the 30-yearold dairy.
