Milking jacket with thumb hole sleeve keeps wrists dry
A new jacket made of waterproof nylon puts an end to wet, irritated wrists and arms when milking cows.
Instead of conventional cuffs, the jacket sleeves feature a hole for your thumb — insert your thumb through the hole and the end of the sleeve stays securely in place between thumb and forefinger.
"Wearing this jacket with a pair of nitrile gloves will prevent water from running down your arm, keeping your hand, wrists and arms dry," says Cheryl Mohn. "When you're not working in water, you can pull your thumb out of the hole and fold the sleeve back and out of the way to leave your hands free."
She and her husband own and operate a dairy farm near Lakeville, Minn., and also own Udder Tech, Inc., a business they started in 1994 to make the thumbhole sleeve jacket, along with a line of other dairy-related products.
"When you're working all day long milking and dipping teats, wet wrists can be a real problem," she says. "A lot of our customers were asking for a way to keep them dry. It's ideal for milking and for chores, but it's also great for hog and poultry producers for power washing equipment and livestock facilities. Some of our customers use the jacket in their fruit and vegetable operations and others like to wear it when working in their gardens."
The design for the jacket came from Mohn's daughter, a nurse, based on a type of gown worn when working in quarantined areas of hospitals. Originally, Mohn made just the thumbhole sleeve. Then, customers began asking for a full jacket with the sleeves.
Because it repels water, nylon makes an ideal fabric for the jacket, Mohn notes. "It's also very strong and makes a really good product," she says. "The inside of the jacket features a waterproof coating that is adhered to the fabric." The thumb hole jacket, which is machine washable and dryable, is available in blue or black with a choice of a half zip, or a full zip. Either style can be made with a mesh back for more comfort in warm weather. A detachable hood is also available
The jacket comes in small to 2XL sizes, and price ranges from $41.99 to $52.99, depending on size.
Udder Tech offers a variety of dairy-related clothing and gear, including children's items. The company recently expanded its on-farm office and warehouse facility to accommodate its growing business. The company prides itself on its high level of customer satisfaction, says Mohn.
"We're a small, family-owned company and we stand behind our products," she says. "My role is to stay in contact with our customers, design new products, and to guide our staff to provide our customers with the best service and the best products available."
