Rugged tablet computer works in toughest conditions

Built to meet tough military standards for withstanding drops, vibration, immersion and temperature extremes, the new Trimble Yuma rugged tablet computer weighs less than three pounds and is designed to work where farmers and ranchers work — in scorching summer heat and sub-zero winter cold, in dust and mud, as well driving rain and blowing snow.

"Instead of using your crop management or livestock monitoring software only in your office, this computer lets you also use it in the field or in the barn or wherever you are," says Victoria Gagnon, business development manager with Trimble. "You can carry it with you or mount it on a tripod, pole or in a vehicle to collect information, communicate with your office or transfer data in real time, knowing that your information is protected. It's the ultimate onecomputer solution, with everything you need right in the palm of your hand."

The computer comes with Windows 7 software and features a 32 GB solid state hard drive, which eliminates internal moving parts and protects against impact and vibration. But, it's the combination of internal components, the magnesiumaluminum housing and the seals that remain tight to keep out particles and water which make the Yuma tablet computer truly rugged, Gagnon says.

"It's the most rugged tablet computer on the market. Every component has to pass a very rigorous certification process. For example, the seals don't just keep out water that has splashed on the computer — they protect the computer even if remains under about three feet of water for half an hour."

The range of environmental conditions in which the computer is designed to operate include the ability to withstand 26 drops from a height of 4 feet onto plywood over steel, temperatures of -22 degrees F to 140 degrees F and altitudes as high as 40,000 feet. The computer features a 7-inch touch screen, which is readable in direct sunlight, along with an Intel Atom 1.6 GHz processor, integrated WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS and SDIO and ExpressCard slots. It is available in two color schemes — yellow with black or gray with black.

The Yuma tablet computer operates on two rechargeable batteries, which can last about 4 to 8 hours between charges, depending on type of application and battery, Gagnon notes. "It uses hot-swappable batteries, which you can change in about a minute or less. If a set of batteries runs out, you can replace it with another set of charged batteries without having to shut off the computer — and you won't lose any data."

Two integrated cameras on the front and back of the computer, one for videos and one for photos, are another handy feature. The video camera, for example, could be used to show conditions of a crop or an equipment problem and the photo camera could be used to record notes or other written information.

"Combine that with VoIP communications software, the computer's WiFi and microphone, and you can discuss what you're seeing or doing in the field with someone back in the office," Gagnon says. "Plus, you can use the GEOtagging feature of the camera to identify the location of your images within 1 to 5 meters."

Options include an extended (8-hour) battery set, 12-volt vehicle charger, office docking station and rugged keyboard. Suggested retail price of the Yuma rugged tablet computer, available in either gray or yellow, is $3,999.
